Leading aticle of may 2006. A first downloadable complete book, useful during the current battle in the Iron-Steel Industry

During April, many documents were put on line. The detailed list is given in the entry "changes of the month - changes of May 2006". But the main change is the setting on line of a book: La sidérurgie française, 1945-1979. L’histoire d’une faillite. Les solutions qui s’affrontent (French Iron and Steel Industry, 1945-1979. The History of a Bankruptcy. The Solutions in Competition), published in 1979 by Savelli, publisher now missing in France. The possibility of downloading seems to be appreciated. The book was downloaded eight times in eight days since its introduction into the site. This book is not only the history of a sector, whose problems had consequences as well on the industrialization of France during thirty years that followed the Second World War as on the labour movement and national social protection. It is also an attempt to understand the reasons of the failure. The contradictions created between actors during the phase of rebuilding of the country, because of the difficulties they had to overcome in little time two stages of the division of the labour, are emphasized. The interest one can find with the book exceeds the particular case of the iron and steel industry.

Its setting on line was also a test of the possibility of reproducing a similar operation. The scaning of 245 pages took approximately five hours, pauses included. The text was put in Word at format pdf. The exact reproduction of the original pages is indeed difficult to obtain with the available softwares, without spending too much time. The constraint to use Word had the advantage to allow to easily correct the typographical errors of the original edition and to improve the style of the text. It is this task that took the most time. They require an attentive reading. Ten hours were necessary. On the whole, the putting on line of average length book requires two days. It will be difficult to repeat the operation quickly, although its duration remains reasonable.

In addition to the book, 16 texts were put on line, including three in first publication. They concern many topics: productive models, work, the division of the labour, "end" of work, iron and steel industry, the car industry, fusions and separations of companies, production without assembly line. One of these texts is accompanied by the slides having been used for exposing it. A file containing nearly about thirty photos is attached to another text that presents and analyzes the system of production without assembly line in the Uddevalla Volvo factory. In the sub-entry "Statistics", one will find five new documents (tables and graphs) concerning Renault: production, financial results, productive models, manpower working on assembly line, types of contract of employment, etc In contrary of the texts presentation pages, that generally contains only the a summary and the synopsis of the article, the presentation pages of the statistical documents are almost complete. They give most precisely possible the definition of the indicators, the perimeter concerned, the quality of information, the comparability of the series, etc. Tables and graphs are thus immediately usable.

The visiting of the site was multiplied by three between March, first month of the site, and April: 445 different visitors in March, 1493 in April. Two peaks were recorded on April 4 and on April 6: respectively 144 and 228 visits out of 1857 visits in the month, following the mention of the existence of the site in the French monthly Letter, “Links socio”. The average visiting by day was 62 different visitors. They made 1,24 visits and consulted 6,9 pages, on average during the month. 14% of them reached the site from a link established in another site (“Links socio”, CSU for the moment), 33% from a search engine, 53% by using directly the address of the site. 15% seem to have recorded it in their list of "favourites".

In order to answer various expectations, an effort is made to document gradually all the menus and sub-menus. However, the setting on line of the former texts has priority. The documents of investigation are not forgotten, but their number will increase more slowly. They take more time to be introduced into the site. A new sub-menu was created in the Editorial block: calendar. One will find the program of the next interventions
