Leading article, June 2006. The book "The capitalist division of labour" on line

Now, the book La division capitaliste du travail is completely downloadable from this site. This work could not to be found. It was initially a research report published first once by the CSU in 1974. It was published a second time by ‘La Documentation Française’ in 1975, and a third time by Savelli in 1977, under different titles. It was in France , with some others books, the expression of a research orientation questioning, not only the Taylorism, but also the type of division of the labour developed within the capital-labour relationships. It is shown in this book that the intellectual division of work is consubstantial and specific to this social relationships. This form of division acts through, not only the organisational choices, but more especially through the technical choices, in particular in the case of the automation of the production and of the services. It leads to the deskilling of the work allotted to the greatest number of people and the "overskilling" of the work given to a relatively small number of people. It has numerous implications, particularly on the school and university teaching, on the space distribution of jobs and on labour market.

The same year, in 1974, Labor and Monopoly Capital of Harry Braverman was published in the United States, as well as the articles of the historian David Montgomery on working control at the beginning of the XXth century, the works of the sociologists Kern and Schumann in Germany, and a little later L’atelier et le chronomètre of Benjamin Coriat, etc. The developed thesis by these works seemed to have been questioned by the emergence of the Japanese production system, which was presented like a solution at the same time for the crisis of productivity and for the crisis of the work of the Seventies. Ground researches on the "new organizations of work" and on the new productive models, that one will find numerous examples in this site, and the crisis which knew many Japanese firms have led to a best evaluation of the so-called Japanese system. The book ‘The capitalist division of labour’ can be, it seems to me, a useful source of inspiration for new investigations.

During May, many other texts were put on line, like the previous month: 13 on the whole, for which it is necessary to add 4 documents of investigation, 5 presentation pages of undownloadable articles and the translation of 8 presentation pages in English, Spanish and Italian. The detailed list of these changes is given at the entry "changes of the month - changes of May 2006". All the texts concerning Volvo-Uddevalla, the factory without chain, are now downloadable. It remains to introduce a diaporama of sixty photography’s, that show the production process of this factory. Among the other texts, let us mention Emergence of new industrial models. Hypotheses and analytical procedure. This text was important to realize the co-operative international and interdisciplinary research about the productive models, within the GERPISA. It can be used today as an example of a tool for conceptual clarification, necessary to elaborate a collective program of research.

After the strong acceleration of the frequentation of the site in April, following its presentation in ‘Liens Socio’, a decrease was awaited. Finally there wasn't diminution. Even the frequentation increased a little: 1590 different visitors instead of 1493 in April, 2131 visits instead of 1857, 13.384 read pages instead of 12.767, 481 texts downloaded (154 Mo) instead of 261. The average number of visits per day was 69 in May, instead of 62 in April.

To this « viewed » traffic, for which one has the above detailed statistics, one must add the "not viewed" traffic. For the moment, I don’t well understand what it is. But it seems to be more important than the « viewed » traffic: 20.919 read pages in April, 15.982 in May.

While waiting to obtain the precise details requested, it is important to underline the fact that a personal site is incontestably an incomparable means of diffusion of research works. I suggest to the young researchers to create their own site without delaying. indeed the work to put on line the texts written during forty years of career, as I must do do it in this moment, is important. It is even heavier when the documents of investigation are also introduced. So, it is not too early to start.

The site still presents many small defects, which I will try to remove gradually. But it is one, awkward and aggravating. It happens that the image encrusted at the head of the presentation pages does not appear, or, more tedious, that it is replaced by the image of another page! The cause of this instability is unknown.
